Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father left her family. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford was attracted to acting in her teens, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time however, Ford realised that this was not the best location for her. Ford later applied to be a student for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among Ford's classmates. Ford did not finish her studies until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her debut on television on the show Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such television shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. Tate also performed regularly in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate began to gain attention due to her stand-up comedy in 1996.
